GET YOUR COLLAGEN BACK

March 29, 2019

Collagen is the most abundant protein throughout the human body,  it offers support and strength to everything from our bones to our skin.

Collagen functions much like the frame of a house. Without the frame, your house will tumble down.

The body's production of collagen slows in our mid-to-late 20's and continues to decrease dramatically after age 30.  From there, the collagen levels in our skin begin to drop by 1-2% each year.

What happens when collagen starts to deteriorate? It’s like the frame of the house or the cushion under the mattress, it starts to crumble down.

Our dermis is made up of more than 80% Type I Collagen and 15% Type III Collagen, along with Elastin and Hyaluronic Acid, and specialized cells called 'Fibroblasts' (the 'collagen factories' that synthesize new collagen).  Together they are the key components for the extracellular matrix which gives our skin its structure, elasticity and firmness.

How to simulate more collagen production

1. Laser treatments

How do laser treatments increase collagen? They put energy into the skin that stimulates fibroblasts. Then those fibroblasts begin to produce more collagen. As the skin thickens, wrinkles fade.

2. Fillers

We can also inject fillers to restore volume to your skin. Fillers like hyaluronic acid work in two ways. First, they immediately give the skin more volume when they’re injected. Then, as the body absorbs the filler over time, the hyaluronic acid actually boosts collagen production.

Here’s how it works: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our skin. It keeps our skin looking full and fresh. And the younger we are, the more we have. As we age, our hyaluronic acid level drops dramatically. But when we inject it, we revitalize the skin to its younger, fuller look.

3. Retinol

There are hundreds of creams on the market claiming to make your wrinkles disappear, but the only effective way to boost your skin’s collagen is with retinol. Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. It also stimulates the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color. Additional benefits include fading age spots and softening rough patches of skin.  It takes at least three months of regular use before improvements in wrinkles are apparent, and the best results take six to twelve months.

Retinol is found in many over-the-counter products, but unless vitamin A is listed as one of the top five ingredients and the product is packaged in an airtight opaque bottle, what you're getting might not be all that effective.
